The Society was founded in 1968 and has become the principal society for those with a practical interest in, and appreciation of, the visual arts in Canterbury and surrounding areas. Over the years, membership has grown to the present level of around 100 members, comprising artists of all abilities, including absolute beginners, experienced amateurs, professionals and teachers.
We offer around forty meetings each year in four seasonal programmes. Each programme includes practical painting sessions, demonstrations, talks and picture discussion. The programmes also normally include a session of life drawing, either of a costume or nude model. For full details of the current programme, visit the MEETINGS page. Attendance at meetings averages 20 members.
Artists of all levels of ability, from the newest beginner to seasoned professionals, are welcome. We embrace artistic practice of all kinds and in all media. We are particularly keen to attract younger members and those working in three dimensions.

The Canterbury Society of Art welcomes artists of all levels of ability, from the newest beginner to seasoned professionals, and embraces artistic practice of all kinds and in all media.
We offer a varied programme of events for around 40 weeks a year, arranged in four seasonal sessions. Meetings take place on Wednesday evenings.
The programmes include practical/social painting sessions, talks, demonstrations and picture discussion, when members can bring works and receive praise/advice. Practical sessions include drawing/painting costume and nude life models. Social painting is when members just work on something in progress, or start something new, along with chat.
We believe our programme is more comprehensive than any other local art society and offers excellent value for a very reasonable subscription. For details of the current programme, go to the MEETINGS page.
Membership of the Society is open to anyone with a practical interest in the visual arts who is over the age of 16 years at the time of the AGM in the year of joining, subject to the approval of the Committee and payment of the subscription fee.
The membership fee is £26 per annum, with pro-rata reductions for new members who join part-way through the Society year, which runs from February to the following January. Please ask the Membership Secretary for details.
If you would like to see who we are and what we do before deciding whether to join, please ring the Secretary or Membership Secretary (phone numbers on Contact us) and arrange to attend a meeting as a guest.
